Annelie styled Anne's shoot but once I found out she also modeled I had to do some pix with her, these are very nice, raw images.

Summertime...
Not sure what it is but summertime in Los Angeles always puts me in a strange perspective...its quite different than NYC in the summer time. I seemingly have many more pictures in the process of existing than usual (yes it is a process!)I have recently given up motorcycle racing/track days to focus on making more images, perhaps its just that. My love of motorcycles and the meditation of going fast does take alot of time to make happen, for now I am only taking photos...its my new meditation.

This is LA! part one
Today I began a new body of work to help me visually document how I see LA, titled 'This is LA!" Originally I thought I would be using strobe and daylight for this project, and actually began testing yesterday morning with the lights on location. Funny how sometimes your plans to make pictures lead you somewhere completely different....It took a few hours of doing various lighting tests on site but came to conclusion what I really need to capture along with the subjects, is the west coast light itself. So all I have come full circle and will be shooting the whole project daylight, but at only during the last few hours of light. It makes the project both more difficult and yet also easier. My intern Jesse (a huge help so far) is happy not to have to carry a Profoto pack around with him, but now we are confined to the only the last few hours of daylight.
The first image I made for this project happened on Hollywood Blvd, June 1st , sometime around 4pm. The light and mood of the image worked out so perfect I cant believe its the first image for the project. Usually the first image you do is more of a "breaking down" of the photo process, your own ideas, and of course your self awareness of the image you have yet to capture.
First images, this is LA!
raw with some color correction.

An image from Hollywood Blvd.
There is something stange and magical about Hollywood Blvd. This was actually the first image I made there, and the light has a really great west coast feel to me. Its the east side of the Blvd. , so not as much foot traffic as you may think, even looks sort of desolate here..

A new way of seeing...
For some time now I have been attempting to understand my fascination with Los Angeles.
Its a very different place visually for me, and I am under the impression I must somehow
describe this with photography. So I have a very large personal project which is slowly forming
into an idea, and with some luck, images...more on this very soon, the time is now and things are moving forward...I have a few technical questions to resolve, but those are easy...the ideas itself are always much more challenging...I think perhpas it may lead to some very nice images...
I want to present to you this one image by the late great Richard "Dick" Avedon. Its from his American West series, and I find it one of his stronger images from the book. Actually when I had the good fortune of working with "Dick" (yes everyone did call him that) this image was in mural print form within his brownstown studio on the upper east side. Its really striking in large print format, its a mix of brutal honesty, and an absolute fabrication, which is what is why I am so attracted to it visually. I think currently this maybe a strong influence in my new project, which could if nothing else be interesting in print.
